Therapeutic Photography

Sometimes words fail to accurately convey our internal experience. We may feel stuck in trying to formulate what we mean, with only the vague clue of a felt sense, an image, a word, or a thought. Here is where other modalities of engaging might be extremely helpful.

Therapeutic Photography (photography-as-therapy) is a photographic-based exploratory practice.  It connects the personal experience with the process of taking photos: deciding what will be photographed, setting up, reflecting on photographic images and the emotional experience associated with them, including reflective writing on the personal relationship with images created and gaining personal insights. Other times, working therapeutically with images may involve photographs other people have taken of us, family photos, or images we have collected. While there is a difference between using photography in session with a therapist and part of the therapeutic process and using photography as a self-directed practice, the outcomes can be equally beneficial.

While I enjoy working with photography in clinical practice, my own photographic and experimental pursuits have helped developed a deep curiosity for the medium. You can see some of my work here.

In this highly experiential group you will explore creative writing and journaling as a tool for deepening awareness, connecting with yourself and increasing therapeutic engagement if you are currently seeking psychotherapy as part of your personal journey. For many of us who have experienced the limitations of language in therapy sessions, writing can offer a way of connecting with what has been left unsaid. For those unfamiliar with psychotherapy, this group can provide a safe space to engage with personal material through writing and reflection at your own pace. Using a range of prompts and writing techniques, you will develop a sustainable and healing writing practice. This group has been created with trauma-informed practice in mind and will provide the space and opportunity to write about a wide range of experiences.
